Urge is a cutting-edge, multi-media ballet blurring the edges between dancer & musician, movement & sound, light & media. Urge premiered in Cairns at the Tanks Art Centre on Thursday 12 through to Saturday 14 of February and then toured to the The Synagogue @Adelaide from March 2 -5 1998
The time has been: Leah Grycewicz brings together Rebecca Youdell, Russell Milledge and Rigel Best with international musician/composers Stevie Wishart, Jim Denley and creative consutltant Anny Fodor. Urge works, are site-specific and seek to locate themselves in diverse archictectural spaces. In Cairns the Tanks Art Centre provides a moody site of concrete proportions, in Adelaide an old Synagogue inferred a space for sacred intentions.
Urge intends to break apart the human placement of time, space and choice, through such instruments as violin, hurdy-gurdy, double bass, wind instruments, voice and electronics. The dancers collide butoh dance with ballet amongst media projections, luminous screens, neon light, suspended ladder that bar there, the stairs, the doorway ...your peering eyes...
